Rita Dawkins was invited into membership by Winifred Duncan. She was initiated into Alpha Delta Chapter in May, 1979. She served on several committees including Scholarships, Membership, Finance, and Program. Rita also chaired the Literacy, Research, International Projects and Professional Affairs committees and served as recording secretary for several years.
Rita was the Coordinator of the Bureau of Libraries in the Chicago Public School System. After 30 plus years of dedicated service, in 1995 she took an early retirement when the Department of Libraries was closed. From there she started her own consulting company, Literature Unlimited, where she presented and reviewed selected children’s books to parent groups in various elementary schools. In 1997, Rita was called back to CPS as a consultant to help execute the reopening of the Department of Libraries and stayed until 2003. Her work included recruiting, training and directing six Regional Librarians, thus providing a managing supervisor for each of Chicago’s six Regions.
After full retirement, Rita and her husband enjoyed cruising to such places as China, South America, Africa, the Panama Canal, Egypt, Greenland and Europe, to name a few. Now she spends time facilitating two book clubs, going to movies and attending Yoga classes.
